Hard to believe another revolution around the sun is nearly complete! Time must be accelerating because our journey into 2019 feels like it began only yesterday. Where does it all go?!?! The older I get, the faster it seems to fly, and the days feel shorter and shorter with every setting sun.
Time pushes us forward down this road, even if we try to resist. Adversity brings forth new challenges, change offers new opportunities, experience makes us wiser, and joy makes it worth the ride; when we find it.
2019 provided all these things to me and I hope to heed the lessons it has taught.
This New Year, instead of discussing revelations from 2019, I’ve decided to share my resolution to encourage others.
I’ve been pretty cynical the last decade or so but lately, I’ve been trying to change that. It may sound corny, but I’ve been repeating positive messages to myself in the mirror for the last few months. Unfortunately, I haven’t practiced it every day but come New Year, I hope to make it part of my daily routine.
Sometimes, negativity is caused by conditioning or a pattern of less-than-positive thinking. This thinking can bring about symptoms of depression and anxiety, among other ailments to the soul. I decided to try and break those negative habits by using the mirror method (and eating better, working out, getting more sleep, etc.). This process helps replace bad thoughts with good ones by repeating similar messages to oneself again and again.
The idea is: the more you say positive phrases to yourself, the more you’ll believe them. This results in a reduction of how many negative thoughts pop into your head and makes it easier to break negative cycles.
When I actually take the time to do them, I’ve found some success in combating those cycles. I’ve also found my overall outlook on life improves and is why my goal is to make this a permanent habit in 2020.
Below is the mantra I plan to tell myself every day this coming year:
- I appreciate the life I’ve been given
- I will not settle
- I am strong
- I am capable of doing anything I put effort into
- I will worry about the things I can control
- I will control the urge to react in anger
- I can overcome any obstacle
- I will not let fear hinder me
- I forgive myself my past
- The world will not defeat me
- I will keep moving forward
- I will live my best day today
Obviously, if you’re thinking of trying this yourself, you should tailor this list to what fits you best. If you dig deep enough, you know what about yourself needs improvement or what needs to be worked on. But this list should get you started as it seems to be working for me!
I hope you have a wonderful New Year and we’ll see you in 2020!!!
Before you go!
